Medical Hands on Shadow Programs
Objectives
To provide medical students with the possibility to experience healthcare in another culture with different health and education systems, and to learn how differences in culture can give you a different perspective.
To create possibilities for medical students to learn about global health issues, primary health concerns and basic epidemiology of China, and how it differs from their home country.
To contribute to medical students’ personal development, self-reliance, and openness in becoming future health professionals.
To provide students with the chance to broaden their medical knowledge and their vision on medical issues.
To facilitate the connection between medical students and Chinese health professionals and to provide a platform for future cooperation amongst the United States and China.
To promote tolerance towards differences and similarities within health and towards patients regardless of their sex, religion, or believes.
Duration
The duration of a hands-on shadow program is two weeks or more.
Timing
Our program is available any time of the year.
Mentors
All the mentors are department chiefs who have experience working abroad and/or have an educational experience. Mentors can communicate with students in English.
Safety

Like all countries, China has some crimes. Overall, China is a very safe country, because they have very strict laws on all crimes, and private ownership of guns are outlawed in China.
Accommodation
​
Discovery Medical Inc. provides students with accommodation which is attached to hospitals.
Visa
Students should apply for an F visa by themselves. We will assist you in this process.
Transportation
​
Students can use public transportation in China for personal travel. Taxis are the easiest. In China, compared to American prices they are very cheap. You can also use the subway or the bus system. Public transportation in China is very safe and efficient. ​
Insurance
Discovery Medical Inc. provides medical insurance and accident insurance associated with the hands-on shadow programs.
Procedure
1. Apply for scholarship and program (filling your information and upload your resume) online
2. Make a full payment for the program
3. Sign the contract with Discovery Medical Inc.
4. Interview (Skype interview with prospective mentor).
5. Receive the invitation letter from the placement hospital.
6. Apply for a Chinese visa with assistant from Discovery Medical Inc.
7. Arrange for the program in China
When you arrive China：

The first day of arrival China: Chinese staffs will pick up medical students when they arrived at the airport, settle them down and arrange the insurance for them.
The second day of arrival China: Chinese staffs will lead medical students to the placement hospitals, help them check in. Medical students will meet with their mentors, their mentors will arrange Chinese medical students or doctors to introduce the students to the rules and regulations of hospitals.
Every Friday: American staffs will check in on medical students and address any concerns they have.
During program: Medical students must abide by the regulations in Chinese hospitals.
The day before departure back of USA: Department will hold a farewell meeting for medical students, the mentor will give the medical students a recommendation letter and program certification
Departure day: Chinese staff will send medical students to the airport.
