Hebei Province is called ‘Ji’ for short, meaning ‘Hope’. Hebei is a coastal province in the eastern part of China opening to the outside world. It covers a total area of 187,700 square kilometers and is the only province in China that boasts highlands, mountainous regions, rolling hills, plains, lakes and the seaside. Its provincial capital is Shijiazhuang.
Lying in the vital part of North China and the periphery of Beijing and Tianjin, Hebei Province has served as an important strategic point to the capital city and its environs since ancient times. To some extent, Hebei is overshadowed by its two neighbors: Beijing and Tianjin.





In the long course of history, a large number of historical sites and ancient cultural remains have been let in Hebei. Hebei has three places that have been listed as world cultural heritage sites, and the number of its major cultural relics under protection at the provincial level ranks first in the country.
Hebei Province covers a vast geographic area and is rich in resources, which provides a variety of ingredients for local foods. The food style has been invented and innovative for centuries. And at last, it has got unique food style with the combination of the domestic and international essence.
Hebei Cuisine (also known as Ji Cuisine) Family has three branches, Middle and South Hebei Cuisine, Chengde Summer Resort Royal Cuisine and East Beijing Seafood Cuisine. Middle and South Hebei Cuisine is the most typical cuisine of Hebei and is primarily based upon Baoding dishes. It features a wide selection of raw materials and utilises mountainous wild game, fish from Baiyangdian, shrimps and crabs. The dishes taste strong and savoury and are always served with soup. Chengde Summer Resort Royal Cuisine is based on Chengde dishes.
